The inside perspective: Hughie’s experience of working at Exeter College

I joined the team at Exeter College as a Lodge Porter in 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the Lodge, eventually becoming deputy head porter. The Lodge is at the very front of the college meaning that I got to know all the staff, students, and visitors (Hillary Clinton and The King of Ashanti to name a couple!) who passed through Exeter’s front gates. No two days were the same and we would often get new scenarios and challenges to deal with. Being the first point of contact for the college, I would be the first to respond, whether that would be just lending out a bike pump or supporting a student with their welfare.

In 2023, I took on different role within Exeter College and I am now the Operations Manager at Cohen Quadrangle, this is an exciting new challenge for me and I am slowly getting to grips with the running of the award-winning building. I appreciate the team of colleagues I have around me, including the heads of departments and their teams. Although I am no longer a Lodge Porter, I find that I am still meeting with staff, students and visitors often to help ensure that Cohen Quad is kept as a thriving part of the Exeter College community.

I love working at Exeter and enjoying being in a lively workplace often not knowing what will be the next challenge around the corner! I have not only had the opportunity to progress in my career but also, I have been lucky enough to make great friendships along the way.
